Buying a Second-Hand or Refurbished Phone Safely in South Africa

Updated 16 October 2026

Rising flagship prices have made refurbished and second-hand phones a popular way to get a good phone for less. They can be great value, but only if you buy carefully.

Before you pay

  • Check the IMEI. Dial *#06# to see it, make sure it matches the box and receipt, and confirm the phone is not reported lost or stolen.
  • Ask for a written warranty. A reputable refurbished seller should give you one, and you should know how returns work.
  • Check the battery health. A worn battery is the most common hidden cost.
  • Test everything. Check the screen, cameras, speakers, charging port, buttons and SIM slot.
  • Make sure it’s unlocked and removed from the previous owner’s account. A phone still tied to someone’s account can be unusable.

Safer ways to buy

  • Buy from a seller who gives you a proper invoice with their details.
  • Meet in a public place for private sales and don’t pay until you’ve tested the phone.
  • Avoid deals that look too good to be true. They usually are.

General information only. Keep your receipt and warranty documents.

If a seller won’t let you check the IMEI or test the phone, walk away.
