South Africans lose millions in expired data every month. Here are 5 legal ways to make it last:
1. Switch to a Non-Expiring Network
The simplest move. Capitec Connect data will not expire provided SIM is used once in 6 months. Rain has offered no-expiry since launch with no contracts.
2. Use MTN Pi’s 12-Month Rollover Loophole
Pi offers bundles that roll over up to 12 months, but the app shows “no expiry”. Buy R99 5GB and it stays.
3. Know Your Rights
ICASA’s End-user Charter says data must be active for 6 months before expiry, excluding promos. From Jan 2027, networks must auto-rollover unused data and use oldest bundles first. If Vodacom makes you manually rollover 5 days before expiry, complain.
4. Stack Top-Ups, Not Monthly Bundles
Rain’s standalone products at R165/month with 2GB expire after a month, but any top-up allocations will not expire. So buy small monthly plan + big top-ups.
5. Dual SIM Strategy for Low-Income Users
Buy a R50 Rain 1GB that never expires for WhatsApp, and a Capitec Connect SIM for calls. Total cost <R100/month. You get R10 airtime free on megsApp starter packs too.
Final Checklist Before You Buy:
Check coverage map (Rain is metro-only)
Check if SIM must be used to keep data (Capitec = once in 6 months)
Screenshot bundle expiry in app as proof
Recharge via banking app to get discounts
