A contract bundles the phone cost with data, minutes, and SMS into one monthly fee over 24 months. Add up 24 months of payments, and you’ll often find the total is higher than the phone’s cash price plus a prepaid SIM with equivalent data. That’s the trade-off you’re making: paying more over time in exchange for spreading the cost and locking in your data/minutes bundle.
Where contract wins
If you’re going to spend on data and airtime anyway — which most people are — a contract effectively finances the phone using money you’d have spent regardless. It also protects you from a large upfront cost, which matters if cash flow is tight. And most contracts include some form of device protection or insurance option, softening the blow if your phone is lost, stolen, or damaged.
Where cash wins
If you’re disciplined about switching to whichever prepaid or SIM-only deal is cheapest each month, cash purchase plus prepaid data will almost always cost less over two years. You also own the phone outright from day one — no risk of being stuck in a contract if your circumstances change, and no credit check or FICA approval process required.
A middle ground worth considering
SIM-only contracts — where you buy the phone separately (cash or from us on a shorter payment plan) and only contract the airtime/data — can offer the best of both. You get predictable monthly data costs without financing the phone at contract markup rates.
Our honest take
If cash flow is your main concern, or you know you’ll want to upgrade again in 18-24 months anyway, a contract makes sense — it’s essentially a phone plus a data plan, priced as one. If you have the cash available and are comfortable managing a separate prepaid data plan, buying outright will save you money over time.
